Introduction: The Best Bit of Kit I’ve Bought

I’ve spent more money than I want to admit on products that could help since my cancer diagnosis – I’ve got supplements, IVs, gadgets, and therapies coming out of my ears. Some were worth it, while others were a complete waste.

If you ask me about the single best piece of equipment I’ve bought during this journey, my answer is easy. It’s my HigherDOSE Infrared pEMF Mat.

I use it most nights before bed. Sometimes in the mornings, I sit on it to do yoga or breathwork. Every time, it leaves me calmer, more grounded, and – if I dare say it – more human.

It may sound strange until you try it. Then you’ll wonder why hospitals don’t hand these out when you leave.

What on Earth is PEMF?

pEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy.

This therapy uses low-frequency electromagnetic waves to mimic the natural fields our bodies have adapted to. These fields interact with our cells in subtle but powerful ways, affecting ion channels, circulation, and cellular signalling.

And no, it’s not the same as the EMFs people worry about from Wi-Fi, phones, or power lines. Those are chaotic, high-frequency fields. pEMF uses controlled therapeutic pulses that work in harmony with our biology.

Think of it this way: pEMF isn’t a microwave blasting your cells. It’s more like a tuning fork that helps your body remember its natural rhythm.

How pEMF Works at the Cellular Level

Here’s what actually happens when you lie on a pEMF mat:

  • Ion Channels Reset – pEMF influences the tiny electrical gates in cell membranes, improving the flow of ions like calcium, sodium, and potassium. This matters because those ions control communication, repair, and energy production.
  • Mitochondria Recharge – The “batteries” of your cells (mitochondria) make ATP, your energy currency. pEMF has been shown to improve mitochondrial function, which means more energy for healing, repair, and resilience.
  • Circulation Improves – Microcirculation – the tiny vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients – improves under pEMF. Better blood flow means better waste clearance and nutrient delivery.
  • Oxidative Balance Shifts – pEMF can modulate oxidative stress, nudging cells toward balance instead of chaos. This is particularly important in cancer, where oxidative stress drives the disease and is also a target.

It’s subtle but systemic: pEMF doesn’t “do” just one thing. It nudges the entire environment toward better function.

PEMF and Cancer Care

Let’s be clear, pEMF is not a cancer cure.

But in the context of cancer, pEMF may support in three key ways:

  • Mitochondrial Health – Cancer cells often have dysfunctional mitochondria. Supporting healthy mitochondrial function in non-cancerous cells helps the body cope better with treatment and recovery.
  • Immune Modulation – Some studies suggest pEMF can enhance immune cell activity, especially natural killer cells and macrophages. That’s important when fighting a disease that often disables the immune system.
  • Inflammation and Pain – Chronic inflammation is both a cancer risk factor and a by-product of treatment. pEMF has documented effects on reducing inflammatory markers and relieving pain.

Preclinical studies even suggest pEMF may directly stress cancer cells in certain situations, but the evidence is still early, small-scale, and not something to rely on for a prognosis.

For me, pEMF isn’t about making my tumour disappear. It’s about making me stronger, calmer, and more resilient. And that matters.

Beyond Cancer: What Else pEMF Helps

The reason pEMF is gaining popularity isn’t just due to cancer; it’s also because of its broader health benefits.

  • Bone Healing – pEMF is FDA-approved for non-union fractures. It stimulates bone growth by improving osteoblast activity.
  • Pain and Inflammation – There’s strong evidence supporting pEMF for arthritis, fibromyalgia, and post-surgical pain.
  • Sleep and Anxiety – Studies show pEMF can shift the nervous system into its calm state – improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety.
  • Circulation and Recovery – Athletes use pEMF for faster recovery, less soreness, and improved endurance.

None of this surprises me. Every night I lie on my mat, I feel the difference. My breathing slows, my muscles relax, and I fall asleep more easily.

The Mat I Use: HigherDOSE Infrared pEMF Mat

The one I use – and swear by – is the HigherDOSE Infrared pEMF Mat.

It’s also not just pEMF. It combines:

  1. pEMF therapy (for cellular and mitochondrial health)
  2. Far-infrared heat (deep warming that improves circulation and relaxation)
  3. Negative ions (which may counteract oxidative stress and have some evidence supporting mood and air quality)

It’s essentially three therapies in one.

Why this one? Because it’s practical. It fits in my home, doesn’t require a clinic, and has become part of my nightly routine. I don’t need to prepare myself for it – I actually look forward to it.

My Routine (and Tips)

Here’s how I use it:

  • Most nights: I lie on it for 20-40 minutes before bed. It acts like an off switch for stress.
  • Mornings: I often sit on it whilst doing yoga or my 15 mins of Wim Hof breathing.
  • Pairing it up: Combining it with breathwork really enhances the calm.
  • Consistency: Daily use has a cumulative effect. The more I use it, the more I feel “reset.”
  • Sleep tip: Don’t pair it with caffeine or late-night screens – let it work without any obstacles.

For me, it isn’t “treatment.” It’s a ritual. And when cancer takes away so much control, rituals matter.

Negatives and Cautions

Like any therapy, pEMF isn’t perfect:

  • Not for everyone: It isn’t suitable for those with a pacemaker, those who are pregnant, or those with epilepsy.
  • Evidence gaps: The specific data related to cancer is still limited. Anyone selling it as a “cure” isn’t being honest.
  • Cost: A decent pEMF mat isn’t cheap. But if you use it daily, the value adds up.
  • Overhype: The wellness industry loves buzzwords. Don’t believe the marketing claims about “miracle frequencies.” Stick to what’s backed by evidence.

I share this because credibility matters. If something genuinely helps, I’ll mention it. If it’s just fluff, I’ll say that too.

Why It’s My Favourite

I’ve tried a lot of things since my diagnosis. Some things seemed helpful on paper, but I never felt any difference. Others made me feel worse.

This mat? It consistently makes me feel better.

  • It grounds me when my mind is racing.
  • It helps me sleep when steroids or stress would normally keep me awake.
  • It creates a safe space for my yoga and breathwork – my daily anchors.

And perhaps most importantly, it reminds me that calm is possible. In the middle of chaos, I can find a pocket of peace.

If mitochondria are the batteries of life, pEMF is the charger I plug into most nights.

Conclusion: Calm, Energy, and Small Margins

In navigating cancer, there are no miracle solutions. But there are small things that come together to make you stronger, calmer, and more resilient.

For me, pEMF is one of those small things. It doesn’t take the place of medicine or science. But it gives me back some control, a tool to help me reset, and a nightly routine that improves my well-being.

That’s why I call it my favourite. Not because it’s flashy, but because it works – quietly, reliably, and in a way I feel every day.
